NDFSI Delivers 13 Livelihood Projects to Savo Island Communities

Savo Island, Central Province – A milestone achievement was marked this week as the National Disability Forum Solomon Islands (NDFSI) officially handed over 13 livelihood projects to communities across Savo Island. The initiative, funded by Australia Aid (AusAID), cost more than SBD $200,000 and focuses on pig fencing, supply of piglets, and local chicken farming.
The aim of these projects is clear: to empower people with disabilities by creating opportunities for financial activities and self-sustenance. For many families in Savo, this support means a chance to actively participate in small-scale farming, generate income, and improve their quality of life.
A Proud Moment for Central Islands Province
The official handover was graced by the Deputy Premier of Central Islands Province, who expressed his delight in witnessing such meaningful initiatives taking root in his province. He encouraged the people of Savo to take ownership of these projects, support persons with disabilities, and ensure their sustainability for years to come.
“This is a great initiative piloted in our province. I urge everyone to look after it and assist in making it a success,” he said.
Overcoming Challenges, Delivering Impact
NDFSI’s CEO, Casper Fasala, reflected on the journey that brought these projects to life. He acknowledged that it took more than a year to complete, with many challenges along the way. However, he shared his pride in seeing the projects finally come to fruition.
“Today’s handover is a testament to hard work and partnership. I sincerely thank the Ministry of Women, Youth and Children, the Ministry of Agriculture, and our NDFSI staff for their dedication. I also wish to acknowledge our donor partners, AusAid and UN Women, whose support has made this possible. This is only the beginning – we want to see more persons with disabilities included in the economic activities of Solomon Islands,” Mr. Fasala said.
A Step Towards Inclusive Development
The handover represents more than just livestock projects. It is a step towards ensuring that people with disabilities are recognized as active contributors to the nation’s economy. Through the combined support of government ministries, partners, and the community, the projects serve as a model for inclusive development in the Solomon Islands.
NDFSI remains committed to advocating for and supporting people with disabilities to gain access to livelihood opportunities, strengthen their independence, and take part in shaping the future of the country.
